My schooling and use of technology
ICT barriers in South Africa
My schooling years were in this three schools which Two of them were rural schools namely kgantsho primary school and rorobha senior secondary and the last one was situated in a township of Kwamhlanga namely kwamhlanga high school where I matriculated. In all of these schools I was not exposed to technology because of lack and limited technological resources, it was the first time in UMP (tec) that I had touch the computer and bought a smart phone. Looking at this technological resource e.g computers(ICT) they play every powerful role in providing quality and efficiency in the school system. Education has gradually moved from the period of limiting teaching and learning to the classroom alone to a stage of ICT and internet connectivity and pupils at the basic school level e.g foundation phase, should not be deprived of such an opportunity. Lets look at the barriers that can deprived children from being exposed to ICT.
Barriers to ICT integration in SA schools.
- A lack of ICT literacy amongst teachers and limited access to technology training: insufficient ICT knowledge and skills creates the difficulty of integrating ICT in instruction.
- An inability to incorporate ICT due inadequate or unreliable infrastructure or technical support.
- no access to internet.
- low technical capability.
- limited access to computer labs created by strict timetables and high student computer ratios.
- Insufficient teacher’s time: lack of project leadership within the school and a need for ongoing training and support.
possible solutions: trying to achieve technological literacy through training student, where students are expected to become digitally literate, hence they become well-prepared for a skilled work force in the global market that relies deeply on new technologies. change the pedagogical method used e.g using TPACK, also to train teachers be digitally literate
